Steve Perron in his office brimming with excitement before his big run.

Bow Valley College will be represented in the Olympic Torch Relay tonight, January 20, when Educational Counsellor Steve Perron carries the torch down Banff Avenue in the heart of the Rockies.

“It’s the joining together of not only Canadians, but the world,” says Steve. “It’s amazing to think that the same flame from Greece is something I’m going to help carry and I’m one of 12,000 Canadians who will run across Canada.”

Steve was rewarded with this opportunity when he responded to a RBC and Coca-Cola initiative in the Fall that required applicants to pledge to make their community a better place to live. Successful applicants get a chance to become part of history and carry the Olympic flame.

His pledge was one of sustainability and environmental stewardship. “As chair of the Office of the Registrar’s environmental committee, I pledged to use the same environmental practices and principles used by the College in my home life,” he says.

At 6:15 p.m., Steve will have his torch ignited by the torchbearer before him and begin a 300 meter jog down Banff Avenue to Tunnel Mountain Road.

Steve’s wife Debbie and daughter Bobbie will be in the crowd lining the streets to cheer him on.

Surprisingly, this is not his first time carrying a torch at a major event. Steve has helped carry the Calgary Corporate Challenge torch four times for team BVC.
